What is JSP?
JSP (JavaServer Pages) is a popular Web development platform, allowing you to write or use dynamic, high-performance applications.

JSP needs heavy duty servers to run efficiently, so not all webhosts offer JSP hosting packages.

In order to run JSP servlets, the hosting company must have a JSP container (server) that supports the JSP specification. Many commercial Web hosting companies that provide servlet and JSP support use one of the following popular containers:

  • Jakarta Tomcat
  • Macromedia JRun
  • Caucho Resin
  • NewAtlanta Servlet Exec
  • Jetty
All JSP plans listed are the lowest-priced plan available for that company, which may only apply if you purchase an annual plan. Other plans may also be available. Disk space is reported in MB (megabytes), while Bandwidth specifies either MB or GB (gigabytes). Prices and features are subject to change, so please check each site's information before signing up for a plan.

JSP is a technology for controlling the content or appearance of Web pages through the use of servlets, small programs that are specified in the Web page and run on the Web server to modify the Web page before it is sent to the user who requested it. Sun Microsystems, the developer of Java, also refers to the JSP technology as the Servlet application program interface (API). JSP is comparable to Microsoft's Active Server Page (ASP) technology. Whereas a JavaServer Page calls a Java program that is executed by the Web server, an Active Server Page contains a script that is interpreted by a script interpreter (such as VBScript or JScript) before the page is sent to the user. An HTML page that contains a link to a Java servlet is sometimes given the file name suffix of .jsp
